Short Bio

Mauricio earned a bachelor’s in law and a master’s in economics from the National University of Colombia, an MSc in environmental science from Wageningen University, and an LL.M from McGill University. His professional career includes roles as a law clerk, an economic analyst, and a public servant in land management and land tenure. Before enrolling in the IDP program at FAU, he worked at the Colombian Constitutional Court and as a professor of Civil and Economic Law. Over his career, he worked with local NGOs and international organizations on natural resource management, deforestation, and mining policy. His thesis focuses on the human and environmental rights risks posed by the EU’s “Strategic Partnership” projects in third countries under the Critical Raw Materials Act.

My research focuses on how the sustainability provisions of soft law trade instruments, such as the EU Strategic Partnership, can be applied in a context of trade reconfiguration and under Free Trade Agreement rules and the tensions they create with the Business and Human Rights Framework. I aim to examine how those trade law instruments deal with the trade-off between competitiveness and sustainability.
