Short Bio
Puru Malhotra earned his bachelor’s in business economics from the University of Delhi and his master’s in Development Economics and International Studies from FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg. In Delhi, he volunteered for various NGOs, doing market research to enable better education and health access for local communities. In Germany, he worked as a research assistant for both private and public organisations, focussing on topics like corporate sustainability, labour economics, just transition and climate policy. Since November 2025, he has worked as a doctoral researcher as part of the International Doctoral Programme in Business and Human rights (IDP-BHR).
The project examines the interaction between state and private actors in accelerating renewable energy deployment and investigates the mediating role of policy in institutionally weaker contexts. Using a mixed-methods approach, it explores the effectiveness of policy and legal instruments in promoting the deployment of solar PV and wind energy, the implications of fossil fuel support, and the challenges of achieving an equitable and just energy transition. By addressing these issues, the project seeks to provide insights into the socio-economic complexities of the energy transition in under-researched countries and generate evidence that can inform policy and industry efforts towards a net-zero emissions future.
