Cluster Retreat 2026

Effective interdisciplinary work requires good communication, trust and regular exchange, especially within a new collaborative project like the Cluster of Excellence Transforming Human Rights. This is why the Cluster members got together in a small Franconian town for a retreat in February, exchanging thoughts and planning the next steps.

As a kick-off, we started discussing the term “transformation”. Where’s the difference between a transformation and a revolution? And are the terms transformation, transforming, and transformative used to describe the same things? (spoiler: not necessarily)

Later on, we dived deeper and in groups along the five “megatrends” the Cluster is focusing on (autocratization, fragmented economic globalization, international migration, digitalization and planetary environmental crises) discussed questions fundamental to our research. For example, the group working on economic globalization debated how different types of fragmentation interrelate, while the autocratization working group planned to look at transnational repression as a manifestation of autocratization in the upcoming weeks.

You can find a short interview with our Cluster speakers Prof. Dr. Katrin Kinzelbach and Prof. Dr. Markus Krajewski recorded during the retreat on our Instagram and LinkedIn pages.
