“Protecting Migrant Rights and Democratic Rights through Law: Friends, Foes or Strangers?“, a new research project based in the Transforming Human Rights Cluster of Excellence at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), aims to examine the entanglements and disentanglements between the legal practices to protect migrant rights and democratic rights across Europe. Focussing on legal practices in Denmark, Germany, Greece, Poland, Turkey and the UK domestically and supranationally, the project will ask whether and how real-world experiences to protect migrant rights and democratic rights though law are entangled or disentangled, for what reasons and with what consequences.

Your Tasks

The postdoctoral researcher will work in close collaboration with the co-PIs of the project, Professor Dr Grażyna Baranowska (FAU) and Professor Dr Başak Çalı (University of Oxford), and will be based at the FAU.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct independent and collaborative research at the intersection of migrant rights and democratic rights. They will:

1. contribute to the mapping legal practice communities working on migrant rights and democratic rights in the six jurisdictions
2. develop a preliminary research matrix examining how the relationship between migrant rights and democratic rights manifests across different country contexts
3. co-organize three practitioner workshops.

The role will also involve conducting expert research interviews for the project.

Your Profile

Necessary Qualifications:

• Completed PhD/doctorate (thesis must be submitted by the starting date of the contract), with a strong focus on migration and/or democracy in human rights studies
• Experience in legal practice or in working with practitioners
• Experience of publishing academic work
• The ability to work to a high academic level and publish research in English

Additional Qualifications:

• Knowledge of migrant rights/democratic rights in at least one of the country case studies (Denm ark, Germany, Greece, Poland, Turkey, UK)
• Strong knowledge of European and international standards at the intersection of migration and democracy.
• Training in or previous experience with socio-legal research methods

The Cluster of Excellence “Transforming Human Rights,” based at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), a large-scale, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research consortium funded through the Excellence Strategy (ExStra) of the German federal and state governments for seven years (2026-2032), addresses the potential and limits of human rights in the context of worldwide transformation processes. Particularly, it examines the transformation of human rights norms, institutions, and practices within the five megatrends of autocratization, planetary environmental crises, migration, fragmented economic globalization, and digitalization.

Through the Cluster’s Nuremberg Global Human Rights Fellowship program, we seek to involve experienced human rights scholars and practitioners as Fellows and build an international, diverse, and inclusive network for collaborative and transdisciplinary research on human rights centered at FAU. Nuremberg Global Human Rights Fellows will undertake research related to the Cluster’s objectives while benefiting from exchange with our scholars, particularly early-career researchers, the wider FAU academic community, and the general public.

Responsibilities and Opportunities

As a Fellow, you will work on your own research project based on your specialized and in-depth expertise, chosen for its complementarity with other research within the Cluster. You will also contribute to the Cluster by, for example, participating in workshops, colloquia, or conferences, and engaging with early-career researchers. Your contributions, especially during your term of residence at FAU, will add to the vibrant life of the Cluster. You will have opportunities to develop new collaborative ideas through access to the multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary research environment of the FAU human rights research community, and Fellows are expected to publish the result of their research. 

The fellowship will last up to twelve months and include a time in residence at FAU of one to six months, combined with forms of non-resident collaboration with your designated FAU academic host before and after the residential period. The expected residential period is six months, subject to discussion with your host and coordination with the Cluster. The current call for applications envisions that Fellows will take up their appointment no earlier than July 2026 and complete their tenure as Fellows by the end of the summer academic term 2027. As a fellow, you will receive a fellowship stipend of € 3.500 plus a mobility allowance while resident in Germany. Round trip travel costs to and from Germany will also be covered. If applicable, you will also receive an allowance for family staying in Germany with you. While at FAU, you will have access to office space in Nuremberg.

Qualifications

• Substantial research experience congenial to the Cluster’s research agendas and/or professional experience related to international human rights governance and advocacy, journalism, legal practice, or civil society advocacy work
• Experience of work in collaborative research and/or advocacy settings and across disciplines
• While a doctoral degree is not required in the case of human rights practitioners, all Fellows will be expected to design and complete research projects independently 
• Fluency in English; additional languages are an asset

• The proposed dates of your fellowship, including the proposed residential period in the academic year 2026/2027, and a rough timeline for the proposed twelve months fellowship period. Applicants may want to take the FAU teaching terms into account;
• A support letter from your intended academic host at FAU. Normally, your academic host will be a member of the Cluster of Excellence “Transforming Human Rights” or a researcher affiliated with the Cluster.

The Cluster of Excellence “Transforming Human Rights”, based at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), addresses fundamental questions about the potential and limits of human rights in the context of several major worldwide transformation processes.

The Cluster’s Research Innovation Hub will contribute to fostering inter- and transdisciplinary research within a large-scale, multi-year consortium by helping to identify and pursue new lines of scholarship. It will address overarching theoretical and conceptual questions of human rights that span the different lines of research pursued in the Cluster.

For the funding period 2026-2032, we seek a substantively qualified and highly motivated researcher at the postdoc level (TVL-13) for a position attached to the Cluster’s Research Innovation Hub.

Within an intellectually stimulating, collaborative, and international team environment, the postdoc will conduct independent and joint, theoretically ambitious research on human rights that aligns with the Cluster’s overall research agenda (approximately 60% of the full-time position). There will be the opportunity to pursue a habilitation project.

Doctoral Program and Data Management Coordinator (m/f/d) 75% (TV-L E13) | 2026-2032.

The coordinator will work in a highly interdisciplinary, international and collaborative team environment in Nürnberg. The position offers ample opportunities to contribute and further develop professional skills related to coordination and management careers in academia.

Responsibilities and Opportunities

• Program coordination: Develop and execute the doctoral program in coordination with responsible principal investigators and other cluster programs such as the postdoc and fellow program.
• Data management and quality assurance: Develop and maintain cluster-wide data management and data protection concepts, including metadata standards. Develop guidelines for data management and security. Gain familiarity with data protection law (especially DSGVO) and plan and monitor workflows for quality assurance within the research information system.
